I am the type of person who needs a barf bag when given a sappy birthday card. I just don’t like flowery, cheesy poetry. Love letters are pure sap. Boring. My eyes glaze over.
The book goes: nursing home in present day, their childhood romance is rekindled in 1941, and then just when the action is about to get good because she has to face her fiancé we bounce back to the present day.
My grandmother died of dementia. The author did not write a dementia story. He wrote an amnesia story. Not the same thing.

Review: This was a book about love and I wish one of the major plotlines wouldn't have existed in it. It could have been done away with and would have been a far better book. The old timey feel of this didn't really move the needle for me but I bet you that this is the type of book, where the movie adapted from it is a million times better than it. I'm going to find out because I haven't ever watched the movie yet.
Warning: There's sexual content that I highly recommend skipping over as you read this, as I myself did.
I can't recall there being any cussing in this book. If you hate cussing, do your own research first.

If you're reading this review, no you aren't.
PT: books I finished in a single sitting, books that make me re-evaluate my favorite genres, books that broke me just a little bit, RATW: North Carolina
WIL
1) Give the people what they want, no bows, no frills. The language here is so simple. So so simple? And yet?? And YET it sells so well???? Contrary to every English lesson ever, apparently writing isn't about language all the time. Sometimes it's just about Creating Feelings and making people sob at 3 AM.
2) Alzheimer's. GOD. Yknow in reviews in the past I've said something about feeling like I've been whacked with a bat after reading a book? This one wins that category. This is the most whacked with a bat I've felt maybe ever after reading something. MAYBE Song of Achilles might just win out overall but this one is def giving Madeline a run for her money. Goodness gracious.
3) Despite despite despite. Give me two idiots who love each other despite it all and I will adore them for all time. In spite of time and distance and circumstance and status, still they fall in love. INCREDIBLE SHOW STOPPING
4) the carolinas!!!! Oh it's so *classic* socialite setting. Brilliant. It's perfectly predictable and I'm obsessed.
WIDL
1) hey, Sparks, uh WHAT THE HELL MAN. I was fine!! I was perfectly content thinking this whole thing was just about two kids falling in love and being in love through old age and living happily ever after. So, uh, WHAT!!! WHAT WAS THAT!! Took my happily ever after idea of this book and sent it through a paper shredder, you did. MEAN and CRUEL and GAH.
NEUTRAL GROUND:
1) review on back cover from Christian Science Monitor: "Proves that good things come in small packages... a classic tale of love." AIUFOIHGSO AAHHAAAHHAHAH did they... not read the book? THis sounds like they didn't read the book.

It was ok, nothing special. The writing was fine, the story was quite basic, as all the interesting parts were missing. This is the type of fiction that everyone can write - the chosen lovers, their special love. The part in retirement home is nice, but in general it’s a boring book.

Mam mieszane uczucia co do tej książki, głównie przeczytałam ją dlatego, bo kocham film na jej podstawie i myślałam, że książka jak zawsze będzie lepsza ale tu się nieco pomyliłam
