Although Oyeyemi remains a skilled writer whom I enjoy on the sentence level, I struggled to get through this twee Wes-Anderson-like fantasy. It was almost weird tale enough to pull me in, but never quite.
Early on I wondered if it was a complicated political allegory, like true magical realism, but I’m pretty sure it’s just a non-honeymoon with mongooses.

4.5 - very fun read! Oyeyemi has such beautiful entrancing writing. Felt like a ghost story..in reverse?? Only downside is I felt I couldn’t get a sense of the personality of the characters. But the story was great!

This is one of the strangest things I have ever read and I think it is fair to say Magical realism just isn't for Pats.
With detailed and lyrical narration, thoughtful writing and a well paced plot, I should have been consumed by this one but what the deuce did I just read?
I was lost for a lot of it but did really enjoy the way the stories unfolded as the train journey went on.
I can think of so many people that I would recommend this book to because I know they will love it and take from it what I couldn't.
I can tell you with absolute certainty that I had no idea what I was reading lol
