The investigation in this book was genuinely captivating and kept me hooked. The reason that my rating drops is because I need Quinn and Costa to either get together or put it out of their minds completely. These are two characters who have already been together, and now aren't because they're working with each other. I like Kara and I don't like seeing her basically being told to hang back because Matt has a thing for her that he allows to cloud his judgement. Kara is totally capable as evidenced in this book and I need Matt to allow her to continue being capable. I will say keeping her female characters strong is something that Brennan is extremely good at as an author. So I'm looking forward to the third book!

3.5 out of 5 stars.

Kara, Matt and the FBI newest Mobile Response Team are back to capture another killer. This sequel picks up from the last book, with Kara still undecided about joining MRT permanently. Matt is back at the helm, keeping peace with all the other law enforcement units. Kara and Michael are going undercover to see if they can solve the murder of a young intern, and find out who is contaminating the water source. The murdered intern was investigating on her own after no one seemed to take her seriously. I enjoyed this novel, but not as much as the first one. It seemed like there was a lot going on in this small town. Some of it was predictable, and some of it seemed to be a stretch. But...when it comes to Brennan's novels, I am willing to overlook how realistic this would be in real life. This is another solid book in the series, and I am looking forward to more!

Out of the four books published so far, I liked this one the best. Maybe it was the setting, the atmosphere...

Tell No Lies by Allison Brennan is a multi-layered mystery. Although this latest release is the second installment in the Quinn & Costa Thriller series, it can be read as a standalone.

FBI Special Agent Matt Costa and the rest of the Mobile Response Team are currently working on a murder case in Arizona. The death of Emma Perez appears to be tied to a copper mining company that might be dumping toxic waste. Agent Michael Harris is working undercover inside the company.  Agent Ryder Kim is posing as a college student so he can surreptitiously meet the other agents. LAPD Detective Kara Quinn is on loan to the team and she is working undercover in a local bar. Zach Heller is digging for information that will hopefully provide them with the details they need to put the pieces of this puzzle together.

Costa is working with Joe Molina, the son of the owner of the Southwest Copper Mine. Joe is uncomfortable providing inside information to the FBI. But he wants to prove his father’s innocence.  Joe makes no effort to hide his interest in Kara, so she agrees to spend  a day with him in hopes of learning new information. Harris is finding it difficult to lie to the workers he is befriending but he continues hoping he will overhear incriminating details from plant employees. Zach believes he might have discovered the key that will break the case wide open, so he feverishly works around the clock to prove his theory. Before her death, Emma confided her suspicions about the toxic chemicals to Frank Block, who dismissed her concerns. He has taken time off from work to see if he can locate  the toxic waste site. When their main suspect is murdered, will Costa, Kara and the rest of the team find Emma’s killer?

Tell No Lies is a complex mystery with several twists and turns. The pacing is initially a little slow, but the story soon gathers speed. The storyline is well-developed with story arcs that are quite interesting. Each of the regular characters is likable with realistic strengths and weaknesses. Matt and Kara’s relationship takes a personal turn but their blossoming romance is quite understated. With a shocking plot twist, Allison Brennan brings this intriguing mystery to an edge of the seat conclusion. Fans of the genre will enjoy this newest addition to the Quinn & Costa Thriller series.

Allison Brennan is a must-buy author for me and has been since I started reading her books two or so years ago. My favorite series by her is the #LucyKincaidSeries which now has 18 books in it (I know, right???) along with numerous novellas. But this series is still relatively new.

Originally the MRT (Mobile Response Team) series, Brennan renamed it the Quinn & Costa series, after the two main characters. I’m glad that she did, because these two main characters are what keep me reading.

This book had a slow start, and I wasn’t sure what to think about it for awhile, but that might come from having wanted Quinn and Costa together as they had been toward the end of the last book. But instead, they now work together and are undercover in what seems like a simple investigation but soon becomes quite complicated.

Around 50-60% of the way through, things picked up for me – but this also could have just been due to my busy week and finally having time to read now. I truly enjoyed this read, the story, and uncovering more about these characters along the way. I know Matt Costa has a lot more going on than we’ve learned so far, so I look forward to reading many more in this series.

From murder to environmental awareness to human trafficking… this book covers it all.

Brennan’s books are incredibly well-researched. I learn a lot regarding police process, the FBI, border control, and other states while reading her books. I cannot recommend them enough.
