The surrealistic nature of this story held my attention but didn't catch my feels.

Third and final book in The Broken Earth trilogy. I did not enjoy it as much as the first two books, but still, wow, what a conclusion to all this pain and loss and extensive world.

Pros:
✅ the writing, always the writing. It's just so well crafted. Points of view, second person, scenery description, emotions, magic, and all of it! How does N.K. Jemisin do it?
✅ the detail and complexity of this world. I don't think I could ever find a book with a world quite like this one. And this third book really delved into the history and the past, the how and why and when.
✅ the characters are still amazing, but I do think that this pros point can also share with cons because certain characters I did not feel as connected to or felt were as important or significant. Still, it's hard to not feel their pain and wish that they had better circumstances.
✅ ultimately the themes of this book resonated the loudest and the strongest, especially with it being so well wrapped and bundled in this story that took so many interesting turns it was hard to not feel all the feels.

Cons:
❌ the pacing of this was a little difficult to follow along. At times I felt my interest drop off because we would get perspectives from a very long time ago and then perspectives where very little seemed to happen, or it moved very slowly in comparison to how things seemed they should move along.
❌the same thing I said in the pros section about characters. Certain ones just felt a little more empty than in the first two books.

What an incredible trilogy though! I am glad I read it and now know why it won awards. I'm not sure I could easily pick up another book by this author, but I am interested in considering her newer works.

"Now it's not just a caravan. It's a rusting quest."

God this book was everything that I could have hoped for in the last book in a series. I loved seeing how all the different parts that had been set up in the past two books would come together in this final one. I am also glad that many of my questions I had were answered in this book. There were parts (the more sciency) where it kinda went over my head. But that didn't really impact how much I enjoyed this. I will miss this world and the characters.
