I like the book's concept, the main twist and the main relationship but it's nothing special. It's a mundane exploration of small town psyches; one of those thrillers that's more mystery than thrill (my preference). The audio narration is near perfect that the villain's intentions outshone their ridiculousness for a second. The ending was the book's weakest point along with the passages told through the victims' povs. I guess it was to give them a sense of humanity, characterization beyond their deaths, but the anecdotes were too short and frivolous creating unnecessary filler. The mystery is not good but the message - ham-fisted as it may be - is.

Good :) Middle of the road mystery which was what I wanted / expected. The ending was a little too predictable and wasn’t all that satisfying but it was still good :)

Amy Engel is incredible at writing mysteries with a lot of heart. I love how her books are short but always pack an emotional punch. I loved The Familiar Dark slightly more because of the snowy setting, but I Did It For You was great!
