Good light read. Girl figuring out what love is. Her best friend is pregnant and they are trying to survive high school.

Too teen angsty for me. I probably would have liked this when I was younger. I’m glad Halley came to her senses at the end!

Honestly this book was just very boring and entry level. I really loved Saint anything so I thought I’d read more of her stuff but it was really bland. Like it’s a book but that’s  about it.

I enjoyed the story. This is my third Sarah Dessen book and it was good. I thought the story was good, but some characters were not as developed as other characters. I enjoyed reading the different POVs in the book. I was getting to know each character better in their perspective of how they think and feel. The ending was good and it redeemed the book for me.

More preachy than I remember. Definitely not a big fan of the comments about purity culture, slut-shaming (e.g. “We’re not like those kinds of girls.”), and “saving your virginity for the right person” pervasive throughout. Outside of Halley coming to terms with Macon’s harmful behavior, a lot of the major themes (possibly intended for teenage readers to absorb) are outdated and—in actuality—societal narratives teenagers need to un-learn.

Halley’s mom drives me absolutely crazy. I know that their relationship slightly improves (which still feels like a generous descriptor) by the end of the book, but I find it hard to forgive her for her uncompromising self-righteousness and incessant need for control of Halley. As a child of therapists myself, it is very obvious how unhealthy and over-the-line her behavior is, and she should know better without Halley having to tell her so.

The friendships—between Scarlett and Cameron and between Scarlett and Halley—are the real stars here. Everything good in this book comes from those.
