Junji Ito's Uzumaki is quite literally a spiral into horror.
We follow Kirie Goshima as the people and city around her descend into the madness of the "spiral". Junji Ito has a way of taking a mundane topic and taking the readers on a journey that becomes increasingly creepy and disturbing as story progresses. Ito's art is top tear among mangaka and he never shies away from showing a scene in it's entirety. If someone is going to get hit by a car (and trust me, they do in this manga) Ito will draw out each and every one of the gory details. My personal limit for gore was reached and then promptly surpassed in chapter 10 Mosquitoes. And then again immediately after in chapter 11 Umbilical Cord.
Was I disturbed by this manga? Yes. Absolutely with out a doubt yes. However, that's the beauty of Ito's work. As the book got creepier, as the spiral started to fully take over Kurouzu-cho, I couldn't stop reading. Ito engrosses you in the mystery that is the spiral proving why he has reached such acclaim in the horror genre.

Never have I ever set my eyes on something so gruesome, cruel and disgusting and yet so enthralling that has a magnetic pull to keep me glued to the pages until the end.
If I was not convinced that I still had my innocence and childlike naivete left in me, now I know for sure that whatever little I still had, dissipated with every page I turned, consumed by the disturbing images which Junji Ito so cleverly illustrated.
Sigh.
The manga follows the life of Kirie, who resides in Kurouzu-cho, a land that is cursed by spirals. Her boyfriend, Shuichi is convinced that those affected by the spirals are becoming erratic and display weird behaviors after being exposed to the power of the enigmatic shape.
The visuals are shocking and are beautiful in a disturbing way. I don't often read horror but this is definitely one of the ones that will reside in my head for a long time to come. Two things for sure, this will definitely not be my last Junji Ito and I'll never look at spirals the same way again.
