The book straddles the line of haunting and beautiful. The plot is often haunting but the beauty of the novel lies in the prose and the message, that love persists and is powerful.
The plot moves slowly and at times feels rather redundant and Cormac McCarthy’s writing can often feel as though it’s somewhere between excessively verbose and poetically beautiful; nonetheless, despite having a good suspicion for how the book would end by the time I got there, I was reduced to tears. Rarely has a book moved me quite like this one.

A classic apocalypse tale. It follows the life of a father and his young son as they try to survive in a world that has been destroyed by some form of unnamed apocalypse. Travelling a seemingly endless and dangerous road, the nameless duo are brought across different aspects of the apocalypse, highlighting the different human reactions to a situation such as this.

There are two reasons that I cannot give this a higher rating; one) the grammar and punctuation are next to nonexistent, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it does make it hard to read at times; two) no matter what problems the duo come across, they are solved quickly and without any real consequence- most of what they come across isn't relative to the plot past showing the reader how this new dystopian world has changed people, and it would make little difference to the plot if it wasn't included.

I post on threads about a book that made you want to throw it in the garbage can inspired me to come back and review this book I read two years ago.

This book is garbage. I had no interest in being in that awful man’s head for so long.

The only times he brings up his wife (the only mention of a woman in the entire book) he introduces her using what her breasts look like in the particular memory he’s thinking about. Even when it’s in reference to their young child.

There are much better apocalyptic/dystopian books out there. Please don’t bother and especially don’t give more money to this asshat author.

It made me want to weep, and then made me feel bad about the wasted energy of weeping.

Gets me every time I read it, such a dark yet intimate story that seems to fly by. Absolutely beautiful prose as to be expected with Cormac McCarthy, strangely a comfort read for me.
