I love the John Wells character that Alex Berenson has created. I thoroughly enjoyed "Twelve Days" and for that reason I was delighted to find "The Wolves" at our local library. I don't know why, but this book just didn't grip me the way all his previous books have. Instead of being sorry when the book ended, I was glad to have finally finished it. I look forward to future John Wells escapades - just hope they're better than this one.

Finished up the story that began with [b:The Counterfeit Agent|18079700|The Counterfeit Agent (John Wells, #8)|Alex Berenson|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1372045614s/18079700.jpg|25441560] and continued with [b:Twelve Days|22571522|Twelve Days (John Wells, #9)|Alex Berenson|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1446485380s/22571522.jpg|42038017], this was one of the better books in the series and I really enjoyed it. Listened to the audio version which was read by the always excellent George Guidall.

Good addition. Could have been a five star but ending was rushed for some reason.

Unfortunately this is the 10th book in a series I have not read the previous 9 for. Audible did not advertise that it was a sequel. I did however enjoy this and will read the other 9.

Thoroughly enjoyable story because of Berenson's style. He injects a dry wit into many passages, and the two main CIA guys who work together, John Wells and Ellis Schaefer, maintain an edgy banter that mirrors their relationship.

The pacing was smooth and adequate, but the Chinese general/big gambler part of the story dragged things down a bit. His subplot role didn't seem as crucial in relation to the number of pages used to set up his part of the overall plot.

Hard to go wrong with Russian thugs and a crooked billionaire businessman as the prime antagonists. Settings were exotic--Israel, Hong Kong, Russia, the White House (well, maybe not "exotic," but ...). The dialogue was crisp, believable. I had a bit of trouble buying into the fact Wells was such a rogue agent who was allowed to operate the way he did with the covert blessing of the CIA and POTUS, but hey, it's a fictional thriller, so be willing to suspend reality enough to enjoy a darn good tale.

Based on this book, I will read more thrillers by Alex Berenson.

Also, George Guidall is one of the best audiobook narrators in the business and is always a pleasure to listen to. He has an ideal voice for thrillers.

Great start to end. Don't know why I'm into the Chinese theme.
