This book was amazing, but has parts that are very difficult to read (or listen to, in my case). The author narrates this, which is brilliant. I’m committed to learning and trying to gain some understanding and empathy for those different than me. Highly recommend this book but be very aware of the authors content and trigger warnings at the beginning of the book.

As I love reading memoir, I adore this new memoir. I never thought this would be an awesome read. This is so heartwarming to say the least.

I’m not rating this book as I don’t feel it’s appropriate with it being a memoir, to put a rating on someone’s life story but all I’ll say is that if I was to rate this book it would be a solid 5 star. An incredibly important, thought provoking, eye opening read! I can’t explain how well written this is and how accessible it is. With it being a ‘ya memoir’ I think it’s going to help SO many young males and females in the LGBTQIA+ community and the black community. Just incredible.

Content warnings: Racism, Homophobia, death of a friend, death of family, mentions of suicide, sexual trauma, sexual assault, grief (there are content warnings at the start of the book)

IT’S AN OWN VOICES MEMOIR
I love to read own voices books as I think they absolutely offer more nuance towards the experiences of minority and marginalised groups. That’s why this book is going to be so important for so many gay black teens going through similar experiences to Johnson. This offers such fresh insight for an experience which is so underrepresented in our current media.

This is a really important book that everybody should read. It's a memoir written by a person that is both queer and black and it talks about the opression a lot of these people face. It's a really, really impolrtant book - especially for young people that just figured out that they are not fitting into a hetero mold and they want to learn more about their sexuality.

Beautiful collection of personal stories and anecdotes, with the audiobook narrated by the author. I love it when authors narrate their own audiobooks, especially memoirs. At times, it felt a little too heavy handed and explainy, but I'm not sure teens would notice or care, since the messages are so powerful.
