I wish we saw more of what the future held after the ending, but it was still a satisfying end that leaves one feeling as though everything will be how it should be with time. I enjoyed this book more than the first, it had more adventure, action, and suspense/twists which I enjoyed. It does a wonderful job showing how one can fight for what they love, deal with grief and loss, and still find happiness in the end. A wonderful read I would highly recommend.

The strong aspects of this book are on level with the first book. That said, much of the pacing for the first half is unbalanced. The protagonist also makes choices and voices feelings that come across fairly inconsistent with where the first book left off and they’re not really even partially addressed for half the book. I ultimately had fun so I went 3 stars but I took a long break from reading down the middle of this for several months and I was mulling a DNF. I was even considering a 2 star once I did resume but it picked up.

I speed read the last 100 pages of this book because it got so depressing I just wanted to be done with it. That's not to say it's a bad book, because it's not a bad book. But throughout the entire book, Xingyin goes through so much physical and emotional pain and suffering it started to really bother me. Like it became just straight up unenjoyable.

Also it sucks that Liwei just ends up basically trapped in his role as the new emperor. I feel like eventually at the end everybody gets what they want and becomes happy, except him. And that's a bummer, because it's easy to imagine that in the future, he ends up exactly like his shitty father because he has no happiness in his life. I wish he had gotten a happier ending. :/

ALSO, it's a bummer that we never get to read about any instance of Wenzhi and Xingyin actually just being happy together. It just ends with the promise of potentially being happy together in a few decades. :///

ALSO ALSO ummmm hello why has no one even considered polyamory????? whack.

I loved this book more than the original. I understand why some might be unhappy but I was hooked and on the edge of my seat on every page.

The love triangle went on WAY TOO LONG when the choice was so obvious.

Also, the timeline of this series doesn't make a bit of sense and it confusing and inconsistent.

Continuing... This book kinda wrapped up nicely. Like, it's open ended but in a resolved kinda way so WHAT is the third book going to be about? This was planned as a duology as far as I knew, so I worry this third book is going to fall very flat.

Luckily, I have the FairyLoot editions so even if it is at least it will look STUNNING on my shelves.

This book was so much more emotional than the first. It felt faster, probably due to it's shorter time frame than the plot of the first book, stretching years. And it actually made me cry, like actual tears wear shed during the last 100 pages. This was not where I thought the romantic plot would go, but I am not upset about it. The ending, filled with grief and pain, was amazing, but I do feel slightly unsatisfied with how it finished. I know there may be another book coming, so hopefully, what I would've liked from this ending is there. Xingyin continues to be my favourite protagonist ever, I honestly love her, and I highly doubt I will respect and love another character as much as her.

Unlike the first book, this was not an effortless read for me, but it was still filled with just as much magic. The plot twists with Xingyin‘s romances are what saved this story for me. If she had ended up
marrying and becoming empress
, I think the book would have felt like a waste, but as it is, I really am glad I pushed through to the end when I was struggling to continue. I loved the maturity this book brought to Xingyin‘s character, and I am so glad she found her happiness in the end. I also want to mention one of my favorite parts about Tan’s writing: the way she describes everything wish so much care and attention to detail. There is so much life and color in each page and that really is what made me adore this duology.
