I need to stop listening to the most gut-wrenching audiobooks of daughters talking about their relationships with their mothers when I’m at work because I am literally on the edge of tears all the time.

An excellent memoir. I think it describes the themes of grief, food and family very well. I loved all the passionate descriptions of food and the fond memories they hold.

This book and heartbreakingly beautiful. I don’t typically read a ton of memoirs, and surprised even myself as picking this title for my book club, but I am so happy to finally read this one that has been on my TBR for a while now.

I found the perspective and flashbacks a bit choppy at the start - it was hard to get into as Zauner jumped between times from one paragraph to the next. However, as the book progresses, I found no longer to be the case.

She has a such a unique voice and I loved her ability to capture such immense grief and also occasionally break the tension with a line that was so completely relatable I had to laugh.

Striking vignettes (crying in h mart, singing in Vietnam)
Motif and symbols (kimchi fridge full of photographs)

One word: Visceral

what a gorgeous book, words flowing from story to story, a deeply personal insight into michelle’s life and journey through grief.

the haverford and bryn mawr references towards the beginning were pretty cool to know — 100% a must read for bico students

The memoir is centered around the loss of Michelle Zauner's mother. Michelle writes about her youth, her teen years, and her early adult years. She talks about the illness that led to her mother's passing and how she coped with the passing. The relationship between Michelle and her mother (and her father) was tempestuous. The book goes forward and backwards in time. A good part of the books talks about food. Food was the primary way her mother showed her love. And, after her mother died, becoming good at preparing some of the dishes her mother made was a primary way Michelle tried to keep the memory of her mother alive and pay tribute to her. As my food tastes are not very adventurous, and I am not a good cook, I sometimes struggled getting through the lengthy descriptions of meals and food preparation. The passages made perfect sense in the context of the book. The end of the book talked about the initial success of Michelle's band Japanese Breakfast. I recommend the book to anyone who wants to read a memoir about grief and the way one person attempted to handle the loss. Just be aware that there is a lot of detailed discussion about food.
