My first brush with Renée was when I was at college and her name was being repeated over school announcements and posters about a production that was being put on.

Being a budding little actor, I could not believe someone was already using Renée as their stage name.

Renée’s choice in structuring her life as a warm and rich patchwork quilt is enchanting. Skipping from her garden exploits to her trip to New York back to an excerpt from her works creates a delightful blend of stitching together the many moments that moulded her wairua and strengthened her mana.

When I read about the different paths, stories, and adventures she has taken and continues to take, I was awe-stricken by this wāhine toa. The spirit she lives her life with, the fullness of her ideas, the honesty she deals are captured within this taonga of a book.

I now understand that Renée has put our name to better use than I have. But she has also rejuvenated my affections for theatre, community, friendship and my own curiosity for the world. I hope one day soon I am able to walk past her rose covered fence and wave hello.
