First book of poetry I've read in a while all the way through, and also it's my first Angelou book. Snappy, humorous at times, and freedom-seeking. Pretty good, but in terms of her creative potential it didn't blow me away. I felt at times the poems were throwaway remarks, seemingly unfinished or lacking the refined concision of someone like Plath, and that no real engagement existed between her and the written word. Blasé is probably a good descriptor. But I guess that casualness to life etc. is the appeal. Favourite poems were "Kin","In Retrospect", "Prelude to a Parting","Insomniac" and "Prescience".

I knew that I loved “Phenomenal Woman” and “Still I Rise.” I found a few new favorites: “One More Round,” “Ain’t That Bad?” and “On Aging.”

Very accessible poetry and powerful. 3 particular poems made an impression on me as I kept reading them over and over - the rest were harder to relate to or empathise...

Even if I'm not African American, even if I have not experienced everything she has experienced, as a black person, as a woman, as a sister, a daughter and most importantly a human, I identified with these poems.

I've never really been into poetry but I'm trying to expand my horizons by reading or listening to books outside my typical comfort genres. I quickly picked Maya Angelou's And Still I Rise to listen to while I was getting dinner ready. I always love it when the authors narrate their own books because they use the inflection that's meant to be there, which I feel is super important with poetry.
Her poem, Woman Work, was so relatable, even though certain aspects of the woman's work I do now is much different from the woman's in the poem. But when Ms. Angelou started singing, I stopped and stood still, covered in goosebumps. It's just that powerful. I need that sound on repeat. 🖤
Powerful poetry by a powerful poet!

Maya Angelou doesn't need my promotion. Favorites in this collection include the titular "And Still I Rise" as well as "Life Doesn't Frighten Me." The three-star rating was because this collection alsocontained some of my least favorites of her poems. Some of that was because they were very religious, and I am not that, so they may or may not be goood but I don't connect with them.
