When fiction mends unfortunate reality. Comics as an act of protest and resistance.

The artwork is magnificent and the themes deeply anarchist, as this work from the 80s takes us on a dizzyingly surreal journey that explores life, love, sex and the violent death cult of government. Of particular note to me was the soccer player who could have scored but chose not to, and would rather have impressed with his skill than to win some arbitrary game with cheap rules, underlining the themes of Borges about how life has no meaning except for the journey and the moment. As an athlete myself, I rarely did lose the game, but I'd much rather you remembered the impossible behind the back pass I'd completed to a largely inept teammate who was finally able to score a basket.

A masterpiece whose impact isn't fully realized until you've turned the last page and want to read it all again.
