Jonathan Lethem notes in his introduction how astutely West captured the phenomenon of “American Vicarious” nearly a century before the rise of reality TV. I was just as much by the degree to which he nailed what we would now call toxic masculinity.

“His friends would go on telling these stories until they were too drunk to talk. They were aware of their childishness, but did not know how else to revenge themselves.”

An American tragedy that only grows more relevant with each passing year.

A cynical sombre and quietly depressing feel amidst some manic ramblings and religious fervour, this is one book that captures the mood of New York City during the oppressive depression era and takes us on a dark tour de force. Witty yet bleak this is definately not a lite book although short in length. A good read if you enjoy something left of centre.

I did not care for this scathing book from the 1930s by Nathanael West. It reminds me some in tone of George Orwell's Keep the Aspidistra Flying that I read earlier in the year. They were both written in the 1930s and are dark, dark visions of the world at that time. I liked Orwell's book more as there is more of a story, whereas West's very short novel is less plot based as Miss Lonelyhearts goes from one misadventure to the next.
