Thought the preceding volumes moved the narrative forward more, and also told more interesting subplots ( especially the one about the innkeeper and his wife--my fave!) but this was a solid entry in a great series.

Pirate vs Smuggler vs SHEER STUBBORNESS.

Stubbornness wins.

(This is the least helpful review ever and I love it.)

Not...worse than its predecessor, just less good. The twists throughout were a bit predictable and followed convention more than I've come to expect so in that sense it was disappointing, but the BIG twist at the end I did NOT see coming and gave me a double-take in the best possible way. Would read again just for that experience.

With Dessa's escape from Captain Quinn (on his horse, no less!), she meets back up with Fisk and Topper in a seaside town. While she tries to find them a boat to take them to Astaroth, Drake gets his fortune predicted by a fortune teller. Twists and turns occur with both Dessa and Drake, culminating in an ending no one saw coming! I can't wait to see what happens next.
