Very very cute and we stan Macy and Elliot!! Was a slow builder for sure but did set up a good emotional gut punch at the end there. A story of love and loss and how it changes you. I don’t love the trope of the “girl has a boyfriend but finds out he’s just average after finding a better guy but let’s wait to
break up until the very last possible minute.” Some of the scenes of them growing up were a bit cringe too but at the same time kind of nice to see two people learning about sex and love together which is cringey and awkward in real like.

I liked the first half of the book. I like watching their friendship build up to what it was and also reading about what they meant to each other however we didn’t learn much about Elliot, which I know is emphasised in the past but even in the future we don’t get much substance from him. I was hoping for more insight on him as a person rather than an extension in a sense of Macy. Some things that did bother me in the past were that
Spoiler Macy’s aversion to becoming a couple didn’t make much sense to me as they had already crossed a line which they couldn’t go back from such as kissing, basically having sex etc. I also hated how she would badmouth and slut shame any girl that was involved with Elliot however I was willing to give her some grace as she was younger and you see her grow out of this when she gets older.
The point where the book started to fully make a turn for the worse was the ending where we learn why they haven’t spoken in a decade. There was a lot of foreshadowing to what had happened however I think it could have been dealt with better
Spoiler He gets raped by one of his closest friends but it’s framed more as cheating, which is glossed over and not looked into at all. Some therapy on his end could have helped him deal with the situation and maybe come to terms with it. Furthermore even though it is framed as cheating the author does not seem to care about the fact that he cheated and the one thing that was emphasised was that they love each other, or at least how much he loves her, which is not really sufficient enough for a relationship to succeed etc.
The book had potential if it explored certain things in more depth and truly improved manner.

Better recommendation with similar vibes and similarish MC’s and better writing: People We Meet On Vacation by Emily Henry

I read this book in two days because I couldn’t put it down.

I love that the chapters alternated between “then” and “now.” I loved watching Elliot and Macy’s relationship evolve. They were so cute (as friends and as more).

I definitely cried when Macy shared the full side of her story. That is just so heartbreaking! I can’t say I could’ve made it through that situation.

Spoiler Some of my critiques: I find it a little unrealistic that they could jump back into things so soon. Especially after 11 YEARS! And especially after everything Macy went through! Then again, I didn’t meet and grow up with the true love of my life, so what do I know? Also, I don’t like the way THE incident was handled. Macy’s life was destroyed for two reasons on the same day, but so was Elliot’s (even though neither of them knew about the other’s situation). It would’ve been completely out of character for Elliot to intentionally do something stupid, but I hate that he was sexually assaulted. AND THAT HE APOLOGIZED SO MUCH FOR IT! And tried to downplay it as being just drunk and delusional.

The quintessential friends to lovers trope, done very expertly for the most part. I loved both of the main characters and it was killing me to figure out what the big twist was. Somewhere around 3/4 it became obvious and the sadness I felt was deep, just waiting for the inevitable to happen. Honestly the only thing  bad i can say about this is a spoiler -
Spoiler the scene at the wedding was infuriating. It left a horrible taste in my mouth, I had grown to love Elliot and for him to act like his drunken infidelity wasn’t “good enough” for her to decide to be done with him is INSANE. You pine over someone for 11 years, knowing you fucked up, and then when have her back and you guys try talk about it you rage about how her decision to leave effected YOU?! Come on bro. Take some responsibility. Her dad didn’t have to die for that. Side note, personally I think the dad dying story would’ve been more impactful if he had died on the way to see her after she forgot to call, but that has no impact in my rating. It’s just what I thought was going to happen and it would’ve been even easier for her to blame Elliot for what happened.
