So, I discovered K.M. Moronova with The Fabric of Our Souls and from the moment I read that book I loved her writing.
I opened this book expecting the same sort of experience. On that end, it is my fault perhaps that I was a bit disappointed in this book.
I am not used to reading RH and I am not opposed to everything that went with it in this book.
I was a bit bored with some parts, and very grossed out with other parts.
All in all, I think this was a good read and I would def recommend it. I will be reading the next book as well.
It just didn't rattle the stars for me.

**I received an advanced copy of this book and I am leaving this review voluntarily**

This is an interesting book with an intriguing 'magic' system; enemies to 'lovers' - 'touch her an die' style with very morally grey why choose love interests. Check content warnings before diving into this tale.

The book follows 4 POVs that span across a war-torn country where friends and family are ripped apart but eventually begin to find each other. It was a very compelling storyline and I am curious to know what is in store for the characters in the next book. I wish the first love interest had more time to explore their chemistry before the second love interest was introduced, however the second love interest did bring quite a bit of drama and intrigue to the story.

If you are someone that needs lose ends to be tied up or your questions answered before the next book, do not expect that in this book. Very little of my questions were answered and it ends just as you think you might be getting somewhere. In the end I probably will read the next one, because I really want to know more about this group of characters and what their new empire has in store for them.
