I loved this on audio. This was not always an easy book to read, but I certainly feel like I grew based on my experience reading it.

When I first started to read this book I was surprised at how much my own life ran parallel to the author’s life especially relating to school and church. Those experiences aren’t unique but it is surprising to read that many of the difficult times I ran into when it came to being the only black girl in white spaces were shared by someone else.
While I have moved away from church and religion being a huge part of my life, I tried my best to not to completely breeze past the parts that focused considerably on religion. Trying to reconcile the uncomfortable and sad realities of life with the nonchalant attitudes of those within the church community and their lack of support was the catharsis the author deserved.
Overall, this was a good book and whether you are deep into religion or not, I think this book is definitely worth the read.

More Jesus than I thought but some interesting ideas. White feelings/emotions as hegemonic in situations and events

I don’t normally like to rate memoirs (or a lot of nonfiction in general) but I felt like this book really gave me a different perspective on racial issues.

I dont like to rate memoirs because it feels rude. Far be it from me to rate someone’s vulnerable human experience on the basis of my likes and dislikes for narrative. This book was a very easy listen, and thought provoking. Religion is a large part of this author’s experience however, and that for me is a sticky topic.
