This short, readable novel gave me a glimpse into a very different world to my own. Although brief, it provided a rich insight into a side of Balinese culture that most tourists will never engage with, specifically the role of the caste system and its impact on women and their societal roles.
While quick and easy to read, much of the writing was very wooden and clumsy, with over-exposition a frequent feature. I am unsure if this can be attributed to the original text, or if the translation quality was poor, but it did impact my rating of the book.
The way the book discusses gender and sexuality is intriguing, and I would be keen to find out if these are themes the author explores further in her other writings.
