Dervla McTiernan earned my first 4 star rating of 2023 with this well written, intriguing crime thriller. Complex characters, corruption, secrets...this book does touch on many triggering subjects such as sexual assault, child abuse, murder, suicide, pregnancy loss--read with cautions.

Overall a provoking read.

It was a confusing ass plot and so many characters I couldn't differentiate. ACAB.

Apparently the book is the start of a series and this stood fine on it's own. I won't be reading another.

This was a heavy book, lots of really horrible things uncovered about the police force and the children of the area going back decades all for our Cormac to discover and solve. Honestly by the 2/3rds point I wanted to stop after finding out the why of the decades old mystery but I was invested and needed to know how things tied into the current mystery. Also, there was the unwanted pregnancy of dead lover trope that I hate every time it's in a story. Like there wasn't enough already going on.

I listen to this book for the pop sugar challenge choose a TBR book at random. I knew nothing about this book and I'm not even sure how I owned it. But I'm so glad I listened to it. The narrator did a great job. The mystery kept me going. In general mysteries and thrillers are never five stars for me, but this one definitely kept me intrigued the whole time. There is discussion about child abuse in this book.
