I listened to the audiobook and it took me a little bit to be able to articulate what I dont like about the author's writing style for this book: everything from the plot to the characters felt juvenile and shallow. It wasn't until I read some reviews upon finishing the book that I realized that apparently there is world building for this series in the author's other works. Since I haven't read those works, I can't comment on if they would've enhanced my reading experience for this novel.

Despite that, this audiobook was a decent companion for my solo road trip. It frustrated me that Evangeline didn't seem to have a strong sense of self-preservation and foresight, so I didn't care for a lot of the situations she found herself in. She never seems to ask questions when someone else doesn't something unexplained, which really just seemed like a way to advance the plot. "Being raised in poverty," as the prophecy states, doesn't seem to have forged any street-smarts in Evangeline. These were just a few aspects that I didn't enjoy about the story.

I do already have the second book downloaded on libby, so obviously I'm intrigued enough to want to continue reading.

I enjoyed this book a lot. Like a lot a lot. I don't like to admit it out loud but I'm a bit of a hopeless romantic and this fed into that so well. It's got everything I love, fantasy and fairytale and romance.
