Loving Jay, by Renae Kaye

DNF 21%. I tried to keep reading, but something has been bothering me since the beginning, and I can't stop cringing, thinking about this :

"His voice had given me the shivers for days. It was definitely masculine but with a hint of high pitch in it. Like a pubescent boy getting used to his broken voice. The voice was kind and soft and with a hint of fem in it as he exclaimed, "Oh. My. Gawd!" at whatever the granny was saying."

Ugh. Am I the only one to feel the creeps at this sentence? How comes a pubescent boy voice sounds sexy to a twenty-something guy? I'm sorry, I realize (given all the high reviews) that what bothers me probably doesn't make anyone else think twice but all these references about how immature Jay looks like make me uncomfortable. And I'm not even talking about the ridiculous amount of man, dude, Oh. My. Gawd and Liam's annoying and repetitive inner thoughts.

I love an OFY story.

Jay and Liam didn't appear to work together at first. Liam and his existential crises would usually have me rolling my eyes. Especially the one he had after the first sex with Jay. He'd already admitted to himself that he is in fact gay. He'd already told himself he loves Jay. Then he freaked. That would usually have me ready to DNF but it worked here.

Picked this up because it was on a list of books with greysexual characters. Maybe /maybe/ Liam is grey, but it seems like he's just gay, doesn't want to admit it even to himself, and doesn't have a lot of experience. Really good, really funny book though, love Liam and Jay together.

Totally adorable story. Hilarious conversations and family's.

- Daisy, the car
- their family's
- the banter beween Jay (Jamie) and Liam
- Jay's jealous moment in the train when Liam talks with a woman
- the 'I like Jay but I'm not gay' thoughts, Liam has in the beginning
- Jay's grandmother
- their coffee's
- and of course the moment Liam handled everything when Jay's grandmother died. That shows all the love he has vor Jay and his family.

Unfortunately for me, The Blinding Light set such a high bar that this one didn’t meet that level for me.
I liked Liam and Jay but it lacked the emotional tug and pull that I was expecting. It was a mundane read for me. I did chuckle every time Liam asserted that it wasn’t like he was gay or anything. But in the next breath, he was ogling Jay.

As we got to know Liam, it became clear that this wasn’t a Gay for you story because Liam has experience with men before. He just isn’t comfortable or clear about his sexuality whereas Jay was at ease with who he was.

Liam is one of five brothers and his father is clearly homophobic. I can see why Liam would have difficulty accepting the truth about his sexuality. Jay on the other hand was quite flamboyant. He wore makeup, knew more about achieving clear skin that I apparently do and dressed ostentatiously. As I listened to the audio, I kept seeing Boy George.

The characters were charming. I just wanted more angst in the book. I was in the mood for much more drama. I did like this one better than [b:Safe in His Arms|23479658|Safe in His Arms|Renae Kaye|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1414689439s/23479658.jpg|43070625]. I would recommend this book for someone new to this author or new to the genre in general because it was a nice and sweet. I do like the author's writing style so I will try Shawn's Law next.

Jay & Liam are perfect together. Jay is out & unabashedly proud. Liam is hiding in the closet but once he sees Jay, the closet is no longer an option. The sparks from their chemistry is amazing and they fit so well together. At first I was kind of annoyed because of how in denial Liam was even though he knew he was gay, in fact, after reading him saying, "i'm not gay" for like the 10th time i couldn't help but roll my eyes but I was sooo glad I stuck with it. This is one of those books that is simple, sweet, and light on the angst.

5 stars….
Oh this was great. I loved him figuring out his sexuality and I knew Jay was late on purpose!

Honestly my biggest problems were the dad never seeming to get over himself (not the vibe bro) and the men at the bachelor party having strippers when their wives weren’t comfortable with it (again… not the vibes. Respect your wives? Eww).

Jay and Liam were so cute and truly themselves by the end of the book which was awesome!

1/5 on spice. 1/5 on kink. 1/5 on tears. Poor Liam being ashamed of bottoming was sooo sad.
