Spolery list of notes:
-
Spoiler
humor was great, really helped to compliment the dark mood of the book -
Spoiler
not on the previous book rather but I enjoy the worldbuilding idea of ghosts hating reminders of death rather than being drawn to them like in most fiction -
Spoiler
I liked how much it came through that the societies mainly only care about containing their own power and about nothing else really, with lethe mainly being a necissary evil so they can continue their rituals. that it wasnt created out of a genuine intrest for safety -
Spoiler
hellie :((( -
Spoiler
the plot of a mentor-ish person / person in control turning out to be evil kinda doubled -
Spoiler
DARLINGTON!!!! -
Spoiler
end makes me wanna read the next one :D -
Spoiler
Turners character arc and motivations were explored in a really intersting way and makes me wanna see what he does next -
Spoiler
linus reiter being scary was written really convincingly that i also felt uncomfortable when alex suspected him to be around

Dark, adventurous, grim, morally gray, loveable. The people are immaculate, the setting nostalgic, the writing clever. The senses of adventure and fear, the hope and grief and shame. The characters are thoroughly developed, deep, real. Their motives make sense.
I read Chai's 2 star review criticizing the lack of quiet moments for processing, and I get that. It probably could be a more powerful story if the pace relented for just a moment and let our dear Galaxy think. But it doesn't diminish my absolute delight over this book. Still a 5 star read from me.

Graphic: Death, Grief, and Animal death
Moderate: Addiction, Injury/Injury detail, and Murder
Minor: Police brutality and Adult/minor relationship
