I really enjoyed this, and had a lot of fun reading it. Akira and Naoya's dynamic is a role reversal in some ways. Naoya even as a first year college student tends to be the adult in the room. One of the things that struck me in the beginning was the timid trust Naoya has no problems expressing.
Akira is messy, but not in a negative fashion. I think part of it has to do with his background (which you get a little taste of towards the end). The other part is his unabashed excitement that comes off like an excited puppy.

I ended up down several rabbit holes while reading this. A common thread with ghost festivals, ghostly realms, etc. the world over: getting caught uninvited and eating something will pretty much backfire.
The little details matter so much in this story. They aren't overwhelming, but paying attention is key. The author is painting beautifully detailed scenes, where the little details are the true clues.
