I didn’t enjoy this mystery as much as others by Karin Slaughter.

Consistent enjoyable read from start to finish. The characters were well fleshed out and the story was packing with revelation. It feels like a mystery enfolding instead of a straight up thriller.

Very intense and graphic, trigger warnings include miscarriage, violent sexual assault, murder, gun violence, school shooting. The pacing felt off/lost momentum in some parts where certain sections were retold from different POVs but otherwise was a gripping read.

I like the legal setting but wish the writing, while detail-oriented, was more elegant.

I couldn’t put this one down. Slaughter has a way of truly tormenting her characters and getting under your skin. I really loved both of the sister’s characters in this story. They’re complicated, tormented, and badasses. Slaughter is able to write the same scene from two characters perspectives away that reveals so much empathy and unexpected. The pace slowed a little for me at the end, but overall I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
