i love mieko kawakami and all that she does, though i still feel that her writing style suits long form books like breasts and eggs so much more. definitely read the trigger warnings for this one bc it’s hard to read at points. i deeply appreciate kawakami’s exploration of bullying and loneliness and “outgroups” in this novel, she writes characters that are so tangible and so perfectly reflect the realities of human empathy and lack thereof… especially in the tumult of growing up and coming of age (a pov that differs from all the lovers in the night and breasts and eggs, but still holds many parallels in the base discussion of being othered)

her work is so particular to japanese society, and it makes me with i could speak and read japanese so i could process her novels in their native language
