Heaven is going to occupy space in my mind for a long time, I think. The writing isn't anything flowery or philosophical, but it had the same kind of impact as if it were. It feels so haunting that for a moment I wondered if there were a supernatural element to the book.
The mood is conveyed intensely, and Kawakami toys with hope and hopelessness in an intense way. Even when the climax of the story rolls over without changing anything substantially for our protagonists, you feel like there's no other way it couldve happened. <spoiler/>. The monologues from Kojima and Momose about how they see things will both stick with me for a long time.
