A step up from Vampire Mountain, Trials of Death still feels like an incomplete piece. Trading the horror of the first three volumes for culture shock and adventure, Trials of Death still sells appealing characters in brutal scenarios.

This book improves the character of Darren pushing him a little out of the grey and actually making him look like someone with nuances. However, the effort is dull and unfinished. And I am not refering to the obnoxious attempt of a cliffhanger at the end.
In general the main idea of the second trilogy sounds quite interesting, that Darren is going to get to know the clan and learn his rites and customs. The execution is poor for one capital sin of the writer: explaining rather than showing. Puting monologues in character's mouths rather than letting them act and let the reader judge them is tiresome because this creates a lack of interaction between the one behind the book and the one in front of it.
Also, I find cliché that the trials seem to obey a 4 element pattern. That mysticism is cringey and unworthy at best.

Si es que los libros de esta saga realmente me los devoro. Me encanta. Te atrapa la historia cada vez más. No paran de suceder cosas que te quedas O.O y esperando saber algo.
Vaya giro al final !!! Increible. Totalmente inesperado. Y la personita ? Yo ya voy haciendo mis teorías al respecto

It's all kicking off! The best book in the series, I remember loving it back in the day. Big ole plot twist at the end - it's just set up so well. So much foreshadowing that makes it obvious to someone who's read it before, but I remember being *shocked* the first time I read this one.
So much drama, great side characters, and Darren finally grows up.

I waited nearly a full year for this book, (blame the public library.) and was so relieved to get my hands on it. It was a magnificent, horrible bit of story-telling. Only bad part was when I didn't have the following book on hand after the cliff-hanger ending. Really drove me crazy. Love these books.
