Cuthbert's Way takes place a few months after the events of The Shrine (so reading The Shrine is essential before reading this book). Ryan and his team are still (covertly) investigating the case from the previous book, since his wife was hurt and Ryan almost lost Anna and their baby, Emma. Like The Shrine, pacing in Cuthbert's Way was a little slow for me, but it managed to keep me interested. As usual, the character development and relationships are great. With how far this book is in the series, I'm not surprised about the pacing. This does happen with long series, but even with the slowest DCI Ryan books, there's usually a storyline centring around one of the team that I enjoy reading. The relationship between Ryan and Frank is one of the best parts of the series. The banter and respect is lovely. This is such a cosy series with some loveable characters.

Cuthbert's Way takes place a few months after the events of The Shrine as Ryan and his team are secretly still investigating the finer points of the situation. Add to that, the arrival of baby Emma into the Ryan household and you have the basic foundation of this story. Although this is one of my favourite series, it seemed a bit slower paced than many of the others and I did get a bit lost with the various situations and clues surrounding St Cuthbert. That said, the characters and their interactions are great and well developed over time and the bar has previously been set so high that maybe my expectation have as well! Not the best in the series but a decent sequel of a kind to The Shrine.

I enjoyed the second part of this particular story which follows on from The Shrine. It was full of twists and turns (although predictably Anna ends up thick in it again). It’s the settings that are a winner for me and I loved travelling through Northumberland once again.
It was really interesting to see Ryan’s father develop further and I’m intrigued to the future relationship ahead.
