Roy's first installment in the long running series of A to Z Mysteries. He builds a really thoughtful mystery for the kids in the story. Mr. Roy really loves alliteration names. Also most of the adults in the AZM Universe are extremely nice and thoughtful of the main characters. It's a fun who-dunnit for beginner sleuths.

Spoiler Honestly at a cool 84 pages with illustrations these are quick read as an adult. I would consider doing one of those "I read so you don't have to," YouTube videos about the 26 in the first. As we know, here in the future Roy goes on to write three more similar mystery series. All extremely popular. Meaning more subsequent videos. Like this review if you would watch something like that.

Read as part of our mystery book club unit. Great to get thinking of clues and suspects. The kids really enjoyed this book. Love that accessibility for younger readers. Many of my students have already started reading others in the series.

This was a good introduction to mysteries. Not too obvious and not too hard to figure out.

Super cute short read! Especially great for a beginning book club read! I have the opportunity to host a special needs book club at work and was able to create 8 weeks worth of activities for them!

Cute transitional chapter book series. The mystery was quick and fun. I can see kids reading through this series pretty fast.

This was one of my favorite series in elementary school and I thought these kids were the coolest cats ever.

Disappointment turns to concern for three amateur sleuths when their favorite author fails to turn up at the local bookstore for an a much-anticipated book signing. Dink, Josh, and Rose quickly become convinced that Wallis Wallace was kidnapped and they follow the clues to discover where Wallace has gone!

We are always on the lookout for new series that Charleston will enjoy and I was so pleased that this one was a huge hit (I heard gasps of excitement from the backseat of the car where he was reading this, and as soon as he finished he told me it was the best mystery EVER and insisted I read it too). The story is a simple but fun mystery with easy-to-follow (but not overly obvious) clues leading up to the big reveal. Both Charleston and I were hoping for a little more character development with our amateur sleuths, but I have a feeling we will get that as the series unfolds. As for the kidnaping caper itself, we were both engaged and surprised by the ending.

Without giving too much away, I’ll note that gender and identity play a part in the mystery here. This contributes nicely to the story but I can’t help but think this might not have gotten printed in today’s heightened climate around such issues (which is a shame). I liked the themes of subverted expectations and the fact that our sleuths were smart but respectful in working alongside adults to solve the case.

My Rating: 3.75 Stars // Book Format: Print
