It's probably good that I had a pretty clear idea of the major players going in. My library copy had marginalia in pencil as to relatives, which I didn't need, but could see how one would. That said, it's a solid overview of the strengths and weaknesses of both monarchies and how they played out over the seventeenth-century. The jacket indicates that it's full of stories and anecdotes, which it is not, for the most part, other than the author's often biting assessment's of the personalities of kings and their ministers. Those in themselves don't always line up with my other reading on the period.

I'd suggest this book as an alternative look at the period for someone who'd already familiar with it.
