Well, if that isn't the spiciest book I've ever read.

🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

All jokes aside, I wasn't expecting to cry while reading this book but dang, it got me in my feels.  I was familiar enough with the plot due to seeing so many versions of it, including the most recent adaption, and while the adaptions are quite faithful, there was nuance that was omitted and I appreciated the journey of reading this to find those little bits.

I started Dune after watching the films. I'm so glad I did. As an avid fantasy reader, I wasn't turned off by the length and world building- I live for that shit. I can't wait to read more. It's not a feel good story. It's extremely heavy, but not in a graphic violence way(not Dune, anyway). I particularly love the way Herbert has written religion and the way lore spreads through people groups and shapes their futures. It's chilling, to say the least. It's not perfect- I don't love the way Herbert writes the Baron (feels fatphobic and homophobic, ugh) and I struggled with the way he sidelined Chani. But it's worth a read especially if you're into sci-fi/fantasy purely for how his work shaped future sci Fi in particular.

I understand why this book became a classic. The world-building is very intricate and detailed, a lot of aspects are merely mentioned in passing which makes discovering the world natural and enjoyable. I also think it's a rather interesting concept of chosen one Herbert used.
I do think it is very fast paced at time where I would've enjoyed more detail. The big finale is like 20 pages long. But overall a solid book, while of course being a product of it's time.
