I was pretty disappointed to see that this book was only the telling of Chaol and Nesryn’s perspectives at the same time the last book was going on because I desperately wanted to know what happens from the end of the last book onto now. I am very grateful I did not read this series when it was first coming out because I would have been so mad to have had to wait for the next book to just get this book. I wish the perspectives from this book were brought to the last book and the story line was spilt up among these two books.
I love how SJM ties in Yrene and the healers to this storyline from the Assassin’s Blade book. Also, I really love Yrene’s character in general and how she has kept this token from Aelin for years while she teaches other women how to defend themselves like she told her to. It was very heartwarming to read about her doing what she has dreamed of doing for years.
However, Chaol pissed me off during this whole book. He gave me major pity party and testosterone filled man vibes. I’m happy that Yrene was able to heal him physically, emotionally, and mentally, but I grew tired of his storyline.
Nesryn’s storyline on the other hand was great! I love that she took control of her life and her decisions and was unapologetic about it to Chaol. Also, I am so excited to see what Sartaq and Nesryn’s relationship grows into. I think Nesryn will be a great queen and an idol for their peers to look up to. So glad that Nesryn has her own Ruk now! Hell yes!

I hate this book with every fiber of my being. Chaol Westfall is an awful character who defers only suffering, and I think poor darling Yrene deserved better. All of the twists? Absolutely saw them coming. The blatant and sickening ableism in this book? Disgusting. The only reason I didn’t DNF was because I would’ve been upset that I let a book beat me, and I’d already spent 8 1/2 hours slogging through it.
Graphic: Ableism, Body shaming, Child death, Death, Drug use, Sexual content, Suicidal thoughts, Suicide, Torture, Grief, Suicide attempt, Pregnancy, and War
Moderate: Cursing, Gore, and Miscarriage
