You've heard of "fuck around and find out", not get ready for "find out and fuck around".

How fun was this? For mythology, it's great fun. I can't wait to read more Norse Mythology.

I have read many of the sagas, and this is certainly one of the more interesting. If you pick this up expecting to read of Sigurd’s fight with Fafnir, then you will be disappointed as the dragon dies basically the moment he enters. What surprised me though, and was a treat, was the character of Brynhild. Women are generally not given much characterization in old texts, but this saga is brimming with strong and interesting women, Brynhild paramount amongst them. She is smarter, more talented, and stronger than almost any other character, but she possesses the tragic flaw of arrogance that leads to her undoing. In many ways, not only is she the driving force of this saga, but it is her saga. As such, I would recommend this book in particular for those looking for strong and interesting female characters in ancient texts!

Love this saga but this translation and the author's reading for the audiobook were less successful. Try Jesse Byock's translation instead.

My favourite characters are the women, especially when they get frustrated by the men. There's also some great side eye by the narrator every now and then. I read this to prepare for an Iceland trip but, hilariously, it is not set in Iceland at all! I do appreciate the significance of the Icelandic sagas in recording so much other history.
