I couldn’t decide between 3 and 4 ⭐️ so I split the difference. I’ve heard a lot of love for this book but for some reason it just didn’t live up to the hype for me. All of Kazs “plans” just seemed very convenient. And it barely scratched the surface of found family for me. So maybe it gets better in book 2? I did like Inej and thought her character was really interesting.

The Dutch (inspired) names and history were something to get used to - they deterred me because really, it felt a bit cringey. But I am glad I pushed on! Because Leigh Bardugo created a whirlwind of a story, in a wonderful world with characters that relate well to each other and all have their own twists, thoughts, and story. Great use of flashbacks and different POVs which kept the plot moving at great speed - although it was sometimes a bit too rushed and it is a bit uncertain how old the cast are supposed to be.

I finally fell into the Six of Crows hype after putting it off for so long and my gosh this book didn't disappoint me. It sure lived up to the hype for me. Honestly what kept it from being a 5-star was due to how confused I was on how their world works and trying to imagine everything that was happening. I did not read the Shadow and Bone trilogy prior to this book so that might be on me. Although I still think you can read them separately; however, for me, I do like to understand and gain some context on what I'm reading. Overall I really enjoyed this book and all its characters. I'll definitely be continuing on to Crooked Kingdom.

10/10. All of the characters are so unique and compelling. I liked this book ten times better than Shadow and Bone. I am usually not into heist books or mystery novels but heist + fantasy + found family + a little bit of heartwrenching romance? Definitely my jam. I love that the book has alternating point of views between the characters but still in third person. Also, the book was able to surprise me at every turn which is not my experience with most books.

I only have two critiques: I wish all the characters were just a few years older. To me, especially the romances would be more compelling but the characters would also be more developed. Also, I think that the beginning of the book was a bit muddled and seemed to have too much all at once for introducing a new setting/social scene. Even though I read Shadow and Bone, I was still confused and disoriented about introducing how everything works in Ketterdam, especially since the characters are already established there instead of learning along with the reader.
