You'll be on the edge of your seat, wanting more, and desperate to see how it all pans out for our beloved characters by the end of it.
Graphic: Ableism, Child abuse, Confinement, Death, Drug abuse, Gun violence, Panic attacks/disorders, Pedophilia, Physical abuse, Sexual assault, Sexual violence, Slavery, Torture, Blood, Trafficking, Kidnapping, Grief, Abandonment, Injury/Injury detail, and Classism
Moderate: Child abuse, Chronic illness, Confinement, Death, Drug use, Gun violence, Panic attacks/disorders, Pedophilia, Physical abuse, Rape, Sexism, Sexual assault, Sexual violence, Slavery, Torture, Violence, Xenophobia, Blood, Police brutality, Trafficking, Grief, Death of parent, Alcohol, War, and Injury/Injury detail
Inej, one of the main characters, has a backstory HEAVILY rooted in discussion of pedophilia, child trafficking, sex trafficking, slavery, sexual slavery, rape, sexual abuse, kidnapping, and so much more. While handled with beautiful tact and insight, the depictions of flashbacks and Inej's feelings of these things can comfort survivors of similar things as much as it destroys us. Go with caution. As well, religious bigotry, ableism, trauma, emotional neglect, horrid things happening to children, war, racial fetishization, and so much more is dealt with in tactful ways, but ever presently used as reminders that the world is as imperfect and dark as it is beautiful.aliyachaudhry's review against another edition

First of all, it took me 3 separate tries and 2 years to get into the book, before I finished it fully, and I am so glad that I did! Following along the journey of these 6 great characters made me so happy, sad, proud, mad, betrayed, empowered, lost, found, amazed, horrified, appalled, terrified, resentful and hopeful. I really liked the way the characters were written with each unique set of skills, quirks, and setbacks. I loved experiencing each characters story(poor Kaz, that was rough) and following their quest(or should I say heist :) ).
The plot was intriguing and sometimes predictable and sometimes breath-takingly surprising. It was the perfect mix of both. I really loved the mission our characters were on and it kept me interested all the way through. I also loved the representation this book offered(people with disabilities, trauma, mental health problems, gambling addiction, more trauma, abuse, POC, PTSD, and maybe LGBTQ kinda, maybe?). It was a beautiful story and will definitely read the next book in the series.

I liked the setting and the story so much more than the shadow and bone series, however reading the series back-to-back I'm starting to be tired of this world and kinda cannot wait to go back to some other worlds and stories. Luckily I only have one more book ahead of me.

This group of characters seem rare to me; they aren't heroes or even fighting for their own survival, but they are survivors. It's refreshing to have morally grey characters, to have greedy and selfish characters, to have a life of riches and luxury and freedom be the goal and reward. It honestly felt like a well-played D&D game with lots of pitfalls and personal stakes.
There are so many obstacles and villains in the story; it's fun to watch them choose, to prioritize what the biggest threat is, and knowing that it is different for each of them for their own reasons. The constant shuffle of plans and priorities adds extra tension that keeps the midsection of the book relevant and interesting.
My only complaint is the preface; it tries to do too much. A shorter, more focused POV would help set the stage, theme, and mood much better, especially as most of the information is repeated in the first few chapters. Despite that misstep, this is a fun read with hidden depth and very real, human characters.

The only thing I knew going in was heist, but damn, did this deliver all that and more!
I can see now why many people prefer the Six of Crows duology over the original trilogy. I was far more attached to this cast—their pasts, perspectives, and potential—and found this story to be much more busy, and for the better. One of my main gripes (but also loves, lol, the paradox) with the original Grisha trilogy is that over three books, it felt like very little actually happened, you know? The pace was slower, there was a heavy focus on internal and emotional characterization, and overall, while things DID technically happen, the major plot points were few and very far between. But with Six of Crows, it felt like one blow after another, the moments of reprieve sparse and therefore precious—much more suited to my taste as a reader. Overall, I am obsessed. I'm literally starting Crooked Kingdom after I post this review haha.
I. am. ready.
