I enjoyed the dark humor and surprisingly serious topics in this middle grade classic, which include the absurdity of our punitive "justice" system, racism, illiteracy and houselessness.

The novel is pretty short and wraps up very quickly, leaving the reader to "fill in the holes" at the end. With a slightly higher page count some of the themes could have been explored a little more.

So enjoyable, I read this as a kid and remembered liking it and the movie. Upon reflection as an adult I realized it's about the prison industrial complex so gave it a reread and had the best time. Adventurous, with lovable characters and a true-to-life theme.

I loved this book!!! It was really great and a nice quick read, I finished it in 2 days! The ending was not really that great-mostly just the last couple of pages but otherwise really good! (Also I loved the parts about Sam and Katherine!!!)
