It probably won’t come as a surprise that The Evangelicals is VERY informative. For me, the book served mainly as an overview of the topic and filled in the gaps of my understanding of evangelical history. Trying to consume all of the information, nuances, and figures would take a second, more careful read and a discussion group or partner. I believe it would be worth it.
I would have appreciated more discussion about the developments of evangelical beliefs and less about the politics of evangelical groups. In a similar vein, I felt like I was learning a lot about evangelical leaders but not as much about evangelicals themselves. The reader can definitely get a sense of the average evangelical’s beliefs during any time period, but sometimes this information is lacking.
The writing style was like reading a slightly entertaining textbook, which exceeds my expectation for a book like this. However, FitzGerald uses the phrase “for their part” or “for his part” so many times that I’ll never think of that phrase the same way again. Maybe that’s a tad dramatic, but I promise that it’s true.
All in all, it’s a dense, informative read that I would recommend to anyone who wants a flyby history of American evangelicals.
