A high concept play from exec producer Nick Briggs. The soundscape and concepts are of a high quality and I enjoyed the first couple of episodes but the latter two were, this time a bit of a slog. The small cast and darkness (literal) (also figurative) make for a promising doctor who story but there’s always that point where the writer has to explain everything and usually that bit disappoints.

Upon relistening, I found that:

A. This story is actually quite good, better than I thought the first time around. The sense of ambiance is fantastic, and it really feels like the sound engineers have built a physical space for the listener. Good stuff.

B. Orlenza sounds just like Nadja, and it's extremely distracting lol

It appears I may be one of few listeners who didn't really enjoy this episode. I found the voice filtered villains difficult to understand, and the side characters incredibly unlikeable.

Eighth Doctor and Charley, and a planet lost in darkness. Thought it built up very well, but felt a little confused by the resolution.

Average 8th Doctor Big Finish story, entertaining, The Doctor is great, the dynamic between him and Charley is wonderful. The plot was okay, but nothing special.

Very good Gothic sci-fi. Paul McGann and Indi Fisher are the tops.

All the performances are great. It’s a very sharp tale with good bits of characterization and progression in the Charley arc.

Worth a listen if you’re going through the continuity but also if you want some war between species that can be horrifying creepy.

A simple concept that works so much better than it has any right to.
Nicholas Briggs writes a real cracker of a story that, while the ending is a little muddy, somehow balances on the line between horror and a Douglas Adams-esque comedy.
