I was Anastasia by Ariel Lawhon

The format of this book is was very difficult for me. The story is told in two stories. Anastasia as a child going forward in time. Anna, an older lady, told backwards in time. All the while, you are guessing if Anna is Anastasia.

I had high hopes for this book considering it is inspired by real events. Anna Andreson really convinced many and reached a level of celebrity due to her claims of being Anastasia.

The story of the Romanovs did not invoke strong emotions like I think was the authors intent. And Anna's story was hard to following being told backwards in time.

The author, in her epilogue references her ability to write a novel that was non linear. Well, I think the story could be linear but certainly the way it was written was very confusing. Jumping decades forward and then backwards had me confused. I like the overall story and enjoyed the challenges of such a mysterious person.

I understand the author's use of the backwards timeline as it's the only way to keep the tension as the stories of Anastasia and Anna Anderson are fairly well known (and easy to research if someone doesn't know). It still felt gimmicky and it also meant that both timelines converge in tragedy which made the end of the book pretty depressing.

The jumping around timelines was so hard to follow on audio book. Maybe better if I read it.

A work of fiction but still filled with the history of Anastasia. Throughout the book the reader is drawn into the memories of Anna/Anastasia, leading them to become convinced that she truly was Anastasia. Was she or wasn't she? Used by many seeking fame or fortune, Anna also used people without much shame. Interesting book.
