I listened to the audiobook versus reading it and that’s why I’ve given More Myself the four stars. Alicia Keys has a beautiful cadence to her speaking voice (not at all shocking) plus the added bonus of guest readers was really great.
That being said, if I had read this I would’ve most likely given it two stars. It gives great little insights to key moments in the author’s life they also seem really oversimplified. The audiobook is the only way to go here.

My take on her is that she seems very much unchanged by fame... She's adjusted and had various moments of change, but she is a positive, outward looking individual who is a great role model... Even if she'd rather just be in her sweats picking up her boys at school.

I highly recommend LISTENING to this book via Audible. Alicia Keys narrates it herself and add some whimsical piano musical pieces between sections that just add to its originality. Her description of her journey as a young woman getting into the music industry is almost analogous to my experience as a newly immigrated Latinx being asked to 'assimilate' into the 'systems' here in the US, especially in the very 'white south'. I appreciate the follow-up by Brene Brown in her 'Unlocking Us' that goes deeper into Keys' writing in her book to elaborate how profound many of her experiences on her journey growing in the world she did can be relatable to anyone trying to keep a grasp of their true self in this world that is always trying to mold us to what others want us to be. Thank you Alicia!

I listen to this book and am so glad I did. Alicia Keys' voice brings so much personality to her story. And she sings!

I have been fangirling over Alicia Keys since I was a teenager and she released her first album. To hear her share her own thoughts and experiences as she became a musician was the ultimate fangirl experience. Alicia's journey through this book was a journey to my past self, as well.
