What did I just read because it was nothing short of completely brilliant, brutal, and completely heart-wrenching?! The writing is incredible and the characters are vividly realized and very real in so many ways. Paul Tremblay you mad, heart-centered, terrifying genius. A real knockout and emotional gut punch. "Thank you"

It was fine, just not my type of horror.

"No matter how bleak or dire, end-of-the-world scenarios appeal to us because we take meaning from the end... there's also undeniable allure to witnessing the beginning of the end and perishing alone with everyone and everything else."

I have been blazing through Paul Tremblay's bibliography this year and loving it! And I have to say that The Cabin at the End of the World is my favorite thus far. Tremblay takes the world-ending trope and makes it more intimate and terrifying. A family has to make a horrible decision of which one to sacrifice to stop the end of the world. But is it even real?

This book was an existential thriller with compelling characters, themes, and plot points. Even though it’s a pretty hopeless story, I enjoyed it quite a bit. If you read this after watching the movie adaptation like I did, you will still find a lot of interesting moments. There are a few moments where the shifting perspectives and tenses feel a bit odd, but overall I enjoyed the writing style of this story. One of the best books I’ve read this year.
