I'd never heard of her before the book, but it was really interesting.

The real-life story of Anne Lister, this is the story of her falling for her wife, Ann Walker, and her running her family estate. It's told through letters and historical documents, so there isn't as much fanfair as the show because it's more factual than fanciful.

I have become very interested in the history around Anne Lister - to have such a personal account of queer life to go back to is so rare and exciting. This book seems to try to take the diary and using excerpts form a clear story line leaving out the more mundane portions. It just makes me want to know more. Anne Lister is fascinating.

It's enjoyable to read AL's actual words from her diaries and learn a bit more of her life during the events of the show. But I went looking for a book to give me a fuller view of her than I got from the show, and I didn't feel that this one managed to do that. Enjoyable enough if you weren't looking for anything too in depth.
