I found this book on a list that Goodreads published in honor of Pride Month and it seemed just intriguing enough to peak my interest. While I didn’t really find myself falling head over heels in love with it, there was definitely enough substance in both plot and character to keep me interested. This book takes place in the Deep South…need I say more? Oh wait, and most of the characters are black and some identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community. There, that should give you a better indication as to what this book is about. The characters of this book were complex, alarming, and sometime just down right vile human beings. If you’re interested in reading this book, just make sure you take care of yourself while doing so cause the blatant racism and homophobia can easily get to you as it did to me.

A solid whodunit murder mystery that takes place in West Mills, a North Carolina town that’s still segregated in 1976. Issues of race, homophobia, and police inactivity are prevalent in this interesting tale!

I did find it interesting how characters in the book used the word gay. While the gay community preferred that term in the 1070s, I’ve often heard the term homosexual used often up till the 1980s.
