2.5. I don’t think this was the book for me. I was given it as a gift and, while it wasn’t something I would’ve normally picked up, I decided to give it a shot (the description was enticing). We’re Briefly Gorgeous was both hard and easy to read. I kept wishing I had a professor guiding me through it. Maybe it’s because the author and I lead such different lives but I really struggled to understand all the complexities. I enjoyed the beauty of the words but couldn’t wrap my brain around them. An insightful read but not one I plan on picking up again.

gorgeous writing, heart wrenching story. the only thing that threw me off was the (for lack of a better word) overindulgence in a type of “deep” ruminations that belong more in an instagram post than in a book. that said, i will be reading vuong’s poetry in the future
