I found The Big Sur to be a tough read. Extremely tough. It is the portrayal of a man who's falling to pieces and he's admitting it. He sees what's happening to his body, his mind, his life, his relatives and friends. The world around him is changing and he's not keeping up.
As much I had a hard time finishing it, I always manage to somehow sympathize with Kerouac, his adventures, his ramblings, his drunken stories. He always leaves a smile on my face and some serious nostalgia on my mind.

even though it goes against the whole premiss of the novel, this made me want to leave my life and trek around rural america
