A sweet story about a Fox (Fox 8, to be specific) who becomes curious about the Yumans in the world around him, and embarks on a quest for knowledge and understanding. (and also Fud.) It's hard not to love him, and though the overall message is not exactly subtle, it is interestingly done.

"I wud like to know what is rong with you peeple."

An insanely clever (and fun to read) short story about society's carelessness and cruelty in regards to the environment, told from the perspective of a fox - Fox 8 - who views an act of violence that alters his rose-colored view on human nature.

Unlike a lot of the other reviews on here, I really enjoyed the phonetic grammar. I thought it was a sweet touch that added a little more heart to the narrative.

When a young fox--the dreamer of his pack--teaches himself to speak "yuman" by listening at windows, he finds himself able to try and help his friends navigate the threatening changes taking place in their territory.

Humorous and heartbreaking in equal measure, the story of Fox 8 might have drifted into the overly sentimental in the hands of another writer. However, under Saunders' careful craft, the story becomes a celebration of language, dreams, and hope as well as a poignant tale about cruelty and loss.

Saunders is a stylist and a storyteller, and this tightly-told story gives strong testimony to his abilities.

An incredibly sad but impactful short, modern fable. The writing is not for everyone but I really enjoyed it.

Sad

This started out as a cute story, but took a sad turn. There is a lot of truth in the views of Fox 8, but it was depressing to read.

I'll need to go back sometime and actually read the story rather than listen to the audiobook, because I know I missed out on a lot of the humor and thought of the story by not seeing the way the fox writes. I really enjoyed the story and honestly think this would be a fun thing to write a short analytical paper on.
