I found the first half of the book a bit of a slog. The character's thinking style is very repetitive and I didn't find the bible verse interesting. The vocab and format feels quite middle grade.
Second half picks up plot wise and the writing style mellows. 
The premise is cool and the twist is neat. I like the main characters. Above average overall.

It’s no “Cuckoo.” But it’s more accessible and probably more people are gonna respond well to it, so. Sure!
